Eastern States Cup #3 – Blue Mountain

June 28, 2016

Fall Down, Go Boom.

What a fuggin weekend. Drug my feet on writing this cause it was a miserable race for me and I couldn’t muster the energy. Seems like every other race at Blue looks like the first photo below. Course holds up to rain really well so it’s never really an issue. Great practice in the sun and dry conditions. I was timing myself a good bit faster than last year. Come race morning, we have rain, rain, rain. And fog. We get up to the start gate and you couldn’t even see 50 yards down the course. I was one of the few guys in roll-offs. Everyone else was pretty much no goggles. I crashed about 100 yards down course for no reason. Pitched hard right off the bike and caught myself with both hands. Head hit the rocks. Got up with my hands swelling by the second. Pushed through and raced shook and scared the rest of the way down. Survival mode. First time I ever (almost) got passed on course. I could tell Fred was behind me from how the crowd sounded. Pedaled him to the finish like a DS race. Prevented him from passing me by 1 second. Probably cost him 2-3 seconds but it wouldn’t have changed his spot. They offered him a re-run. He declined. Got home, hands throbbing looking like this. Gotta thank Pryde, Bobby and Fahey for talking me through the lows. Helps fellas!

For the most part, everyone else had a really sick weekend. Lots of personal progression. Liz Jones especially. She had a killer day Enduro racing. Said she felt the best on the bike since coming back from injury. Great pic of Liz in the fog below.

Jamie Jones too. He had some tyre issues almost the entire weekend but he pushed through that.

Gary loved the format of Enduro and DH all on the same day. Said he couldn’t decide which format he liked better but that he was out there for his own personal progression and he felt he achieved that. He and Jeremy ran both races. Jeremy cleaned up – three podiums in one weekend. Good work dude. Pics below.

Joe P. took it super easy all weekend. No over practicing. Ran his lines, learned them and then sat back the rest of the weekend. Beat me, that’s for sure. Clean run in the soaking wet. Good work buddy.

Looney came up to cheer us on. He was nursing a shoulder injury. Drank and stood on course. It was really cool to hear him as we flew by. Thanks for coming up dude. Good having you around.

Render came in DFL just like me. He and I both had a tough race. But he hit that rock drop again all practice long – a clear goal he set for himself. So, progression none-the-less. It seriously isn’t all about medals, people.

Chris Pound had a great weekend too. He raced both Enduro and DH. Brought up some of the sickest meatballs we have ever ate. Got invited into his Canadian friends’ camp and we ate like we were at the home of the fattest Italian lady you ever met. Pasta. Meatballs. Sausage. Bread. Drinks. So00oo good. Thanks Chris. And congrats on the podium buddy!!

And the reason Bobby wasn’t with us? He was coaching his kids in a NICA race. Look what he did for them below. They loved it and they wear these over-sized XL jersey to practice and race in as we speak. Sick. Love ya coach Bermy!

Photos below. Enjoy.
